Lincolnton Quilt Trail
The Lincoln Quilt Trail promotes community pride and tourism throughout Lincoln County by encouraging both residents and visitors alike to appreciate and view first hand our beautiful agrarian landscape, historic barns, and fully functioning farms.
Quilt trails are among the fastest growing grassroots public art movements in the United States. As a quilt tells its story by the fabric remnants of many hand-made clothes and by its particular design, a barn quilt square can also show off love of design, form, color, and history.
The barns of Lincoln County are vanishing. They are an important part of our agrarian heritage. In paying homage to barns still nestled in our gently rolling landscape, we launched the Lincoln Quilt Trail. We invite you to take the back roads to view Lincoln County history and heritage through the Quilt Squares displayed throughout the community at various public and private locations.
The first quilt squares were installed at the Lincoln Cultural Center, the Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, the Jonas Public Library, the Lincolnton Fire Department, Betty G. Ross Park, and the Lincoln Economic Development Association. Each quilt square is unique to its location and not repeated elsewhere in Lincoln County.
To see more photos of these quilts in their locations, go to the Barn Quilts photo album.
The "Old North State" is a nickname for North Carolina as well as the title of the state song and state toast. The moniker dates back to 1710, when the Carolina colony was effectively divided into two colonies, South Carolina and the earlier-settled North Carolina. Lincoln Economic Development Association chose this as our choice of quilt square to show our collaboration and representation at the state level and growth of our economy at the local level through this partnership.

The "American Pride" quilt square is a bold red, white and blue design, featuring stars and bars. Lincolnton Park and Rec exemplifies "America Pride" year-round with programs and activities for residents of all ages.
The stars in the four corners stand for each of our beautiful city parks, Betty Ross Park, Highland Park, City Park and First Federal Park. The white bars connect each of our parks to one another.
The star in the center represents our Lincolnton Rail Trail greenway space at the center of our community.
And the 13 stars in a circle symbolize the sports and programs activities offered to the community at our recreation centers; soccer, flag football, volleyball, swimming, pickleball, tennis, racquetball, basketball, baseball, dodge ball, walking, running and disc golf.
