The City of Lincolnton will celebrate Veterans Day with the annual Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony on Saturday, November 11, 2017. The parade starts at 11 a.m. and will march down East Main Street from Flint Street to Court Square. A ceremony honoring military veterans will take place on the East Side of Court Square following the parade.

Everyone is invited to honor our veterans by marching in the parade, just show up at the parade line-up on Water Street at 10 a.m. and join the group. A number of area Boy Scout Troops, JROTC units and the Lincolnton High School Marching Band are already scheduled to participate.

The highlight of the Veterans Day Ceremony will be the presentation of the 2017 Lincoln County Veteran of the Year award. Marilyn Roseboro will sing the national anthem and other program participants are still being scheduled.

The event is organized by the Lincoln County Veterans Council and sponsored by American Legion Post 30 in Lincolnton. Jim Mayhew is heading up the parade and Larry Cline is leading the ceremony planning. The Veterans Council represents five veterans’ organizations in Lincolnton - Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, American Legion and the Marine Corps League. These organizations work year-round to provide services and support to our area veterans.

Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans and is a U.S. legal holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars. The date and time is symbolic. In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “the Great War.”
